The history of photovoltaic power generation in the world

18, Apr. 2024

Solar energy is one of the earliest energy sources used by mankind, and it is also one of the fastest-growing renewable energy technologies. Mankind has used solar energy as an energy and power for 400 years. The origin of photovoltaic power generation technology can be traced back to 1839 when French scientist E. Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect of liquids, and really used new technologies and started to be used as new energy sources. The use was started from the oil crisis in 1973. The development process of global solar energy development and utilization since World War II can be divided into four stages: the initial stage-the slow development stage-the high growth rate and rapid expansion stage-the slow growth stage and the steady growth stage. Currently, photovoltaics have become an important part of the world's energy structure.

      1. 1973-1994: the initial stage

The outbreak of the three oil crises has made people realize that the existing energy structure must be completely changed and the transition to the future energy structure should be accelerated. During this period, many countries around the world strengthened their support for the development of solar energy and other renewable energy technologies, leading to a global upsurge in the development and utilization of solar energy. In 1973, the United States formulated a government-level solar power generation plan, solar energy research funding increased significantly, and established a solar development bank to promote the commercialization of solar products. Japan announced the "Sunshine Plan" formulated by the government in 1974, in which solar energy research and development projects include: solar houses, industrial solar systems, solar thermal power generation, decentralized and large-scale photovoltaic power generation systems. At this stage, the solar energy industry was initially established, but the scale was small and the economic benefits were not yet satisfactory.

      2. 1995-2006: Slow development stage

After entering the 1980s, global oil prices fell sharply, while solar energy product prices remained high and uncompetitive. At the same time, there were no major breakthroughs in solar energy technology, and the goals of improving efficiency and reducing costs were not achieved. Many countries have drastically reduced solar energy research funding one after another. On the one hand, due to the difficulty of solar energy development, it is difficult to achieve large-scale utilization in a short period of time. On the other hand, the high cost of solar energy utilization has made the global solar energy development and utilization relatively slow. The global installed capacity of solar photovoltaic power generation increased from 0.25 GW in 1995 to 6.50 GW in 2007, and the installed capacity accounted for a very small proportion of the total global installed capacity.

      3. From 2007 to 2013: High growth rate and rapid expansion stage

Since 2007, photovoltaic power generation technology has continued to make breakthroughs. At the same time, as the concept of global low-carbon life continues to spread, global solar energy has entered a stage of rapid development. Countries have introduced government subsidy policies to promote the large-scale commercialization of photovoltaics. The purpose is to allow photovoltaic power generation to achieve scale and technological breakthroughs through a period of support, so that the cost of photovoltaic power generation can compete with traditional energy generation. Due to many driving factors, photovoltaic installations have subsequently ushered in a substantial expansion. From 2008 to 2013, the annual growth rate of new photovoltaic installations remained above 50%, and in 2011 it even reached nearly 80%.
