Rolling Shutter, usually found in CMOS sensors is a method of capturing an image that does not expose the entire sensor pixels simultaneously, actually it exposures line by line from top to bottom.
Rather than the rolling shutter camera, the global shutter camera exposures all pixels at the same time. The shutter opens at a certain time then closed, blocking the light enter into the sensor.
Here is a short demonstration of how rolling shutter works in a simplified 10×10 CMOS sensor.
Most of the people think that the rolling shutter is bad. I don’t think so, it is just a kind of technology. There is no better from one than the other if you don’t compare them according to a given application. General speaking rolling shutter is good when low cost, high resolution, and high frame rate is needed, while the global shutter is good for fast moving objects and machine vision applications.
ArduCAM now introduces two global shutter camera headboard based on ON-Semi (used to be Aptina) MT9V022/ MT9V034 (0.3MP) and AR/AR (1.2MP). The camera headboard can be used with ARM, DSP, FPGA so similar platforms with parallel camera interfaces.

See3CAM_24CUG, is a Full HD color global shutter USB 3.1 Gen 1 camera for accurate and fast capture of moving scenes at 120 fps in full resolution. This Global shutter USB camera features ARCS CMOS Image Sensor with pixel size of 3.0 x 3.0 μm and a dedicated high-performance Image Signal Processor (ISP), that performs all the Auto functions (Auto White Balance, Auto Exposure control). This global shutter camera captures images at a high frame rate, which helps to minimize frame-to-frame distortion and reduce motion blur while capturing fast-moving objects to produce smoother images with greater scene details.
This See3CAM_24CUG is a ready-to-use camera with all the necessary firmware built-in and is compatible with UVC standard allowing customers to speed up their time-to-market. Its external trigger support makes it suitable for applications requiring synchronization of multiple cameras (Stereo vision).
Both global shutter and high frame rate make it suitable for applications such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR), Gesture Recognition, Robotic Vision, Drones, Barcode Scanner, Factory Automation, Conveyor Monitoring Cameras, and Traffic Monitoring Systems.
