First off, if you have an old-school dimmer switch or a three-way lamp, then these probably aren't the bulbs you want. And if you have a Philips Hue smart bulb system, these are also not for you. They are made to go in ordinary fixtures with just a simple on-off switch. And if you do have a dimmer switch already installed, then you can adjust light levels more precisely, more easily, and probably more economically with a dimmable LED bulb. But if you don't have a dimmer switch installed already, you may not be eager to install the already antiquated technology. In that case SceneSwitch can be a nice solution. In my opinion, though, where SceneSwitch really shines is the color-changing bulb. This is where Phillips not only matches but finally surpasses the technology that we took for granted decades ago with the venerable dimmer switch. It's all well and good to be able to control brightness, but where I've really struggled lately was with light color. Blue light gets something of a bad rap lately, with red-tinted glasses and smartphone apps trying to limit our exposure to this terrible, sleep-disrupting menace. But if blue light is nature's way of telling your body that it's daytime, then it is perhaps just as important to be exposed to it during the day as it is to avoid it at night. On weekends, if I sat down for a moment in my dimly and warmly lit living room, I was about ready to fall asleep before my day had even properly begun. I considered getting an electrician to come wire up a second set of light fixtures, but it would've been an expensive solution that cluttered our room with more fixtures and the light switches to control them. And so I very nearly bought an expensive set of Phillips Hue smart bulbs. This product listing is a little confusing because there are three different models available: one offers warm light at three different brightnesses, one offers cool light at three different brightnesses, and the last option (the one I started with) offers three different color/brightness combinations: full brightness warm light, full brightness cool light, and a dim extra-warm light. I've attached a picture showing all three light colors (and one bulb that's off).I agree with another reviewer who says the last two color settings should be reversed. If you're going for a natural light cycle, you would logically want to progress from daylight to soft light to warm glow. As it is, you have to flip the switch twice at every transition, which does get a little annoying when you're doing it multiple times per day. Of course, if Phillips changes it now then the results would be maddening if you tried to use old and new bulbs in the same fixture, so they've backed themselves into a little bit of a corner with that mistake. Other reviewers also complain that a bulb can easily get out of sync with the others in the fixture. This is probably due to the fact that any light switch will "bounce" a little as you turn it on and off--making and breaking power a few times. Phillips undoubtedly set these up to try to ignore extremely brief interruptions in power, and maybe they could try to fine tune it a little better. I don't find it happening terribly often in my ceiling fans as long as I don't flip the switch really quickly, but is actually much more common in my floor lamp, because the lamp's traditional rotating stick thingy has a strong tendency to make a brief burst and loss of power in the process of turning it on. A lamp is just a single bulb so there's no issue of keeping multiple bulbs in sync there, but it's maddening when you're trying to get to a particular color and it keeps missing. That's not likely to be as much of an issue if you're using a conventional light switch. When one of several bulbs gets out of sync (because it will from time to time), know that there's no need to go unscrewing the bulbs to fix it: just flip your switch off and on a few times fast and they'll revert to their warm light setting and be back in sync. Another mild but not product-ruining annoyance. And of course it's only an issue if you have multiple bulbs in the same switch. For me, I'm very glad to have found a way to have circadian lighting in my living room without buying into a complicated and expensive smart bulb system that locks me into a manufacturer's app ecosystem. After my positive experience with the color-changing version in my living room, I decided to outfit my bedroom and dining room with the warm-light version so I can have adjustable brightness. (I don't entirely understand the motivation for dimmable daylight personally, but that option also exists if you need it for doing color sensitive work or simply because you prefer the cool aesthetic.)I could probably overlook the bulbs getting occasionally out of sync with each other, but the fact remains that the color changing modes are in the wrong order. Still, I'm happy to have avoided the cost and complexity of a smart bulb system. A smart bulb system could instead automatically and smoothly change color on a prescribed schedule throughout the day rather than manually flipping switches, but I'm just not comfortable with where that technology stands right now, especially at the current price. For me, at five bucks a bulb, SceneSwitch was a good compromise. But here's the thing: the color changing bulbs have been creeping up in price, which is making the compromise less appealing today. I'm starting to think maybe I should have just installed a dimmer switch. I've seen fixtures that change color using a dimmer switch. I wonder if anyone makes a bulb that does the same. Flipping all the lights in the room off and on to change the color is actually kind of jarring, so it would be nice to be able to adjust them more smoothly and directly.
