Hi all,
Just got our 24KW standby generator installed. Does anyone know if this can run 2 AC units? My electrician said it can but I wanted to confirm if anyone has real life experience with this.
We have 2 AC units, a 4 ton unit and a 3 ton. I understand that both of them switching on at the same time might be too much load, but can one turn on and then the other, like it would typically when we have utility power?
Thanks,
Traveler

It depends. We have a 22kw Generac whole house generator and also have 2 large AC units and a large house. Our generator is only able to run the entire house by offloading certain things when necessary based on the priority we established. So, if the generator can't run everything at the same time, the upstairs AC is offloaded and won't run, then the oven (but microwave stays on) and then some other things I can't remember off the top of my head.
Now, I said "it depends" above because during the freeze in February, our generator ran for 46 hours straight and ran all those things I mentioned above that should have been offloaded. It looks us a while to figure out why, but our best guess is it has to do with the fact that we didn't have our TV or Internet on because the Power had been knocked out to the Xfinity box in our neighborhood. Without the TV and Internet sucking power, we could keep everything else on.

24 kW is quite a lot. 5 ton AC unit = 6 kW. Two units 4+3 ton = 8 kW.
If those 24 kW are not fake, that generator is supposed to handle everything in the house.

Yes, it should handle it without concern. I have four AC units on a 18Kw (older) Generac, and I've never had a problem. Remember that not everything runs at once.Having said that, it's a good idea not to use optional super-power-consumers while you're on GenJuice. You can't easily control AC, refr, frzr, etc, so let them run as-is. But don't run the oven if you can help it, don't use the washer & dryer, just avoid large electron consumers. Not likely. I can run my TV & Internet & router & modem & computer from a 600W UPS. They use so little juice your generator doesn't even notice it.

Then I wonder what it was. I don't have much sample data because our generator has only run once long term (the freeze) and the block's Xfinity box was knocked out so we were without the TV and Internet.Hopefully, you're right and we will be pleasantly surprised by each and everything working next time, LOL.

You weren't running the AC compressors. Single largest electricity user in most homes. The furnaces ran, and the forced air fans, but no compressors.

Ah. So simple, I can't believe I overlooked this. I have tunnel vision (and still do) Re: generators being used in the summer during Hurricane season...

A 24kw generator should have no sweat running two ACs, as long as (like you said) they don't try to start at exactly the same time.
If you have issues with starting one AC while the other is running, check into getting soft-start kit for your AC compressors. With these in place, even a large portable generator like a 12kw DuroMax can run 1 or sometimes 2 central ACs.
