Choose the right installation location for a heat pump

Monoblock heat pump installed indoors

In this monoblock heat pump setup, all refrigeration components are located inside the building. There has to be sufficient space for this (approx. 2 x 2 metres). In addition, air ducts must be installed for the supply and discharge of outdoor air. In a new building, this can be easily allowed for at the design stage.

Location and position: Ideally, heat pumps should be sited in a well-ventilated room, on a solid, level floor with sufficient load bearing capacity. It is worth allowing adequate clearance between the heat pump and wall openings so that the air ducts are spaced out. Corner positioning is particularly advantageous. This reduces the risk of a thermal short circuit and ensures the heat pump can operate efficiently.

Please note: Too small a distance between the air ducts can lead to a thermal short circuit. This occurs when a heat pump immediately draws cooled air back in that had just been transferred outside after giving off its heat.

Where Should I Place My Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump uses the surrounding air to efficiently heat and cool your home.

To get the best performance, it's important to place the ASHP in a location with plenty of airflow. Ideally, the unit should be in a sunny, open, and airy area to maximize efficiency.

According to the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), proper placement can boost efficiency by up to 30%.

  • Placing the ASHP close to your home's indoor unit can reduce installation costs and improve overall system performance by minimizing the length of piping and electrical wiring.
  • Avoid placing the ASHP in enclosed spaces like garages or basements, as limited airflow and increased noise levels can lead to more frequent maintenance and potential breakdowns.

This article will help you get the detailed installation guide. Let's get the detail.

What Is the Best Location for an Air Source Heat Pump

You should place an air source heat pump outside of your property in an open space. It's essential to provide open and ample space for its working. The area should be cleaned before installation and accessible for ducts and electric wires.

However, you should choose the place where your neighbors don't get disturbed by their noise and you can easily do its maintenance and cleaning periodically.

When we had to install an air source heat pump, we managed to do a lot of preinstallation work, and here are 5 possible areas that you can consider for your heat pump placement.

5 Possible Areas for Placement

Climate control pump is not a small thing that you can place anywhere in your home.

You have to consider many things for its right placement. If you do not have ample space in your home, you can place this unit outside of your home where the airflow is excellent and the unit can perform well. We observed the following places suitable for air source heat pump positioning.

1. Backyard

The backyard of your home is the accurate place for ASHP installation. You can choose a less obstructive corner and place the unit at a 1M distance away from the wall. This space is easily accessible and you can keep regular checks on its working and changing the filter and coils will no longer be a trouble.

2. SideYard

Another excellent location is the sideyard. If you have shelter in the sideyard and ample space available for the ASHP position, you should go with that. The space will be well-ventilated and you can also save your unit from harsh weather conditions.

3. Behind Fencing or Landscaping

Placing an air source pump behind the fences and landscape adds an aesthetic integration to your space. Additionally, it will reduce the noise and an eco-friendly environment makes your unit more suitable for the heating and cooling system.

We have placed our ASHP beside the fence and it is easily accessible for maintenance and cleaning.

4. Roof

In some cases where you live in the building and one temperature pump is installed by the property owner to give benefit to all the residents, the roof will be the better place. But you should consider the size and type along with the weight distribution of the unit.

5. Raised platforms

It's the most important thing to consider for air source heat pump location.

The raised platform can be of rubber or wood depending on your choice. If the unit is placed on some support it will increase the efficiency and proper airflow will be there from all sides.

Air Source Heat Pump Distance from House

The clearance distance of the air source heat pump is 24 inches from all sides. Its challenging to install Air-absorbing heat pump yourself. You can hire a professional to do this job.. They will tell you the suitable distance and place where you should install the unit.

The air source heat pump location from the wall is important for effective airflow. If you do not maintain this minimum distance, there will be trouble with its working.

Moreover, you cannot access the unit for maintenance and cleaning purposes if there is no available space.

We have seen that the unit performs well if installed at a suitable distance. The ample space and the proper airflow are the primary factors for its working. Secondly, you can adjust it whenever needed.

5 Heat Pump Location Rules

Heat pump location rules are simple and easily applicable if you want to get an appropriate output. This pre-installation homework is very important to live your life worry-free afterward.

First, we installed our air source heat pump in the basement and it caused big trouble for us. It made a lot of noise that was disturbing for all of us.

Secondly, its working was not good enough as we thought and finally, its maintenance was a mess for us. So, we found these factors beneficial to consider before installation.

1. Distance from the Wall

If you want to optimize the efficiency and performance of your ASHP, you should install it 1M away from the wall. It's the most authentic distance that HVAC professionals are implementing successfully.

2. Clearance Space

You must provide adequate space around the air extract heat pump. Watch for the hurdles like shrubs, fences, or structures blocking airflow. We recommend sparing several feet of space around the unit.

3. Ventilation

There should be proper ventilation around the ASHP. efficiency and performance of heat exchange pumps depends on their proper ventilation.

If you have installed the unit in the utility room or garage, you should find out the accurate way of ventilation. In case of an open-air installation, you do not need to worry about it.

4. Local Regulation

The government of the UK is giving 85% interest on electricity bills. Authorities are promoting the installation of air-driven heat pumps and banning fuel-based heat pumps.

Local authorities have some rules and regulations for its placement. For example, you can place the ASHP at a place that is away from the home and never bother the neighbors because of its noise.

Also, some buildings have legal codes and you should talk to the owners to get permission and installation.

5. Professional Installation

We always recommend to hore HVAC professionals for its installation. A professional team knows better about the pre and post-installation processes. So, you just have to show them the location, and the rest they will do themselves.

What Temperature Should I Set My Air Source Heat Pump?

You should not set the thermostat more than 20 degrees cooler than the outside air. Because most of the devices can handle a 20-degree difference between outside and inside temperatures.

Some people think that 30 to 40 degrees is also a good temperature for its accurate functioning during summer.

However, during winter you should set the thermostat at 18°C (64°F) and 22°C (72°F) to get the normal heat inside.

The temperature setting of ASHP may vary from company to company manufacturing. You can check the comfort level, zoning, and manufacturer recommendations to adjust the appropriate temperature.

What Pressure Should I Set My Air Source Heat Pump?

The pressure between 1 to 1.5 bar is ideal for the effective functioning of ASHP. It's essential to maintain the air circulation heat pump after its installation.

You should clean the filter and check the pressure of the refrigerant. You can also check the manual guide of the unit which should have mentioned the accurate pressure and temperature.

Secondly, a professional can also guide you for its accurate settings.

We have noticed that a pressure of more than 1.5 bar is always dangerous for ASHP. it may cause leakage of refrigerant lines and cause disfunctoning.

Should a Heat Pump Be in the Sun or Shade?

It's better to place the ASHP in the shade. Direct exposure to sunlight will lead to more energy consumption and the unit may get overheated because of sunrays.

While in working condition, climate control units already excrete heat outside which makes it hotter and the constant exposure to sun rays may increase the heating process leading to worse results.

If you have placed a heating unit in an open space where sun rays are direct to it. You should invest in some shades that could provide suitable shelter and also save the unit from rain and storms.

Can You Put a Heat Pump on the Roof?

You can place heating and cooling units on the roof but also watch for the necessary measurements.

The area should be clean, clear, airy, and 1M away from the wall. You should keep the other thing several feet away from the ASHP. Remember to cover the unit and never place anything on the top of the unit.

Also, check for the electric wiring and the duct system of the unit. There should be a proper installment of wires and ducts.

Do Heat Pumps Work Better in the Rain?

The climate control pump works in light rain. Heavy rain is not so good for the unit. You should turn off the electric panel of the ASHP in heavy rain.

If you have installed the unit in an open space, you should cover it with shade. It's important to take care of everything before installation and never expose the unit directly to sunlight and rain.

What Happens If You Don't Have Room for a Heat Pump?

If you don't have enough room or space for the ASHP, you can consider going with compact models. Small-sized units may take up less space. Additionally, you can buy vertical models, that can take up less space. In case you need a bigger size for your building or want to provide a heating and cooling system for a bigger space, you can mount the unit on a wall or place the system on the rooftop.

Moreover, you can install ASHP indoors in garages or basements. Where should I place my air source heat pump is no more difficult when you have a lot of considerations for this.

5 Locations Are Not Suitable for Heat Pump Installation

When we had to place our temperature pump, we did a lot of homework on the pre-installation process. A professional team of HVAC also helped us a lot and provided us with some good advice for the appropriate installation.

1. Limited Outdoor Space

The limited outdoor space is not good for the unit installation. There should be several feet of distance in surroundings and the unit must be 1M of distance from the wall. Hence, clear and clean surroundings are ideal for their proper performance and efficiency.

2. Noise Restriction

Some units start with noise and it remains the same throughout its functioning. You should also check for the noise regulations.

Some advanced models come with noise limitation features which are equally beneficial for the user and the people in surround.

3. Access Restrictions

ASHP should be installed in an area where the unit is accessible and available for easy maintenance. You can check the system periodically and also check the electric wires and ducts.

4. Building Regulations

You should check for the building rules and regulations. If you are living in an apartment, you can talk to the building owner about the ASHP installation. If you find it difficult, you can talk to HVAC professionals for accurate installation.

5. Environmental Conditions

Climate conditions have a direct effect on the efficiency of ASHP. you have to adjust the thermostat of the unit and also set the temperature according to cold and hot climate conditions.

What Is the Minimum Space for a Heat Pump?

These heat transfer systems need a space that is at least 2 feet high, 2 feet wide, and 4 feet long. They also need at least 5 cubic feet per minute of ventilation to work properly.

This is an ideal check for the placement of ASHP. However, the size and type of the unit also matter when you have limited space.

Can Heat Pumps Be Located Indoors?

It's ideal to put the indoor unit inside and the outdoor unit outside. But some latest models have been introduced in the market, which you can place indoors.

If you don't have enough space outside or don't want to indulge in long ductwork, you can place the unit indoors, in the garage, or in the basement.

We have the worst experience of installing ASHP in a garage near our bedroom. It was so scary to hear the noise all day and soon we talked to a professional and reinstalled the unit on the roof.

How Far from the House Can an Air Source Heat Pump Be?

If you don't have space inside your home, you can consider installing the ASHP outside.

However, there should be no more than 15M distance from your house to the place where you are placing the heating and cooling system. It is because you have to do a lot of ductwork which will be a trouble for you.

What Are the Limitations of Air Source Heat Pumps?

During the installation of the air source heat pump, we found some limitations that should be avoided while placing the unit.

  • A closed restricted area
  • Space covered with obstacles and fences
  • ASHP without shelter
  • ASHP beside the wall
  • Worst climate conditions
  • More than 15M from the house
  • ASHP direct to the surface
